The Power of Play: How We Made Coding Fun For Children

In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world, it's essential to equip our children with the skills they need for the future. Coding, once seen as a complex and daunting subject, is now being taught in a way that engages and excites young learners. The secret? The power of play.

Play-Based Learning: Where Fun Meets Education

Imagine your child eagerly looking forward to coding class, not because it feels like a chore but because it's genuinely fun. This is the magic of gamified learning. Coding classes for kids have evolved to become interactive and game-based, making the learning process enjoyable and engaging. Before I started Code School, I was looking for STEM programs for my child, and I found a lot of them focused on meaningless drills that our digital-native kids just don't find interesting. Why should a kid who can create entire worlds in Roblox and play with cousins across the planet in Minecraft be interested in making a bee move in a square?

Why Play: Building Problem-Solving Skills Through Coding

When children play coding games, they're not just having fun but also developing critical problem-solving skills. These games encourage them to think logically, break down complex challenges, and come up with creative solutions. It's learning through play at its finest. But it has to be taught right, and it has to be taught early. I've seen fearless kids at age 6 try to experiment and laugh off mistakes, but by the time they're 10 they're embarrassed to get things wrong. Experimentation - which is the lifeblood of STEM - just seems to be drilled out of them. Part of us teaching coding right has been to create a prompt-based coding curriculum, training teachers to understand that if a student has copied the demo game exactly they've failed to learn and just rote learned, and training assessment coaches to separate correct code from efficient code - understanding that there can be many different coding solutions to the coding prompt.

The Power of Play: Real-Life Success Stories

Don't just take my word for it; countless success stories of children have thrived through playful coding education.

My favourite story is from little Danial, who was 8 years at the time he took our summer camp. He begged me to stay after class and teach him variables because he wanted to add a score and time to his game before everyone else. In any other scenario, I cannot imagine a child begging a teacher to give them more work!

Coding Programs Based On Play

Choosing the right play-based program is crucial if you're considering enrolling your child in a coding class. Look for courses that offer a balance between fun and educational content. Check for reviews and testimonials from other parents to gauge the program's effectiveness. And most importantly, talk to your child about the things they are making in class.

Coding doesn't have to be intimidating or boring for your child. By embracing the power of play, your child can acquire valuable coding skills while having a blast. Preparing them for the future while letting them enjoy the journey is a win-win.
